OD1971

SEGMENT A

Segment A is thst portion of the Green River from just below Flaming
Gorge Dam downstream to the BLM boatr8IIIP at Indian Crossing. This
segmen~ commonly referred to as'Red Canyon, is 16 miles long.

Comments

The study team has determined that Segment A qualifies for inclusion in
the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System. The basis for this deter-
mination is the outstandingly remarkable recreational, scenic and fish
values found in and along the segment. ThesegDJent was found to meet
the criteria for scenic classification.

The major concerns relevant to designating this segment of the Green are:
a) Why add a river segment to the National Wild and Scenic River
System that already receivea protection through. Flaming Gorge
National Recreation Area CU. S. Forest Service)?
b) What effect would designation of this segment have on current
Forest Service and BLM management plans for the area?
c) What effect would designation of this segment have on the State
of Utah lands and private lands located along this segment of
the river?

Inclusion in the.,National, System would offer Segment A greater 'protection
than currently exists. Also, dasignation of Segment A, would, constituJle
a unique and valuable, addition, to the Natioaal Mild and' Scenic Rivera
System. Management as a scenic river would complement current T,"
Federal management plans fox, this segment and would not conflict with
current use of State, of Uf8li and 'private lsnas located -in' this segment.

Your views on the concerns for this segment are welcome.

Alteml!-tives

For that portion of the Green River from just below Flaming Gorge Dam
downstream to the BLM boatramp at Indian Crossing, two alternative plans
are suggested.

Alternative A-1

Take no action. No additional protection offered to the outstandingly
remarkable recreational, scenic and fish values found along this segment.
The National Wild and Scenic Rivers Syatem will not be expanded to
include this segment ,of the Green River.

Alternative A-2

Designate this, segpent as a scenic river area in the NatiQnal Wild and
'Scenic Rivera System. The outstandingly remarkable recreational,

5
