OGJ713

.

USDA Accomplishments

Booths with information on the salinity program were set up at the county fair. A Lower
Gunnison media tour was held in July to inform the media of the value and contributions of
the salinity program to the project area. Approximately 100 people attended which included
congressional and state government representation. The attendees visited completed salinity
control practices, which included surge irrigation, subsurface irrigation and various irrigation
systems used in the orchards.

Uinta Basin, Utah

Implementation began in this unit in 1980. During 1994, 121 new contracts were approved in
the two counties for a total of 1,621 CRSC contracts and ACP salinity/long-term agreements
since the program began, There are 141 applications pending approval,

Planning of new contracts exceeded available FY -94 funds, There are over 30 new contracts
planned and thJough the approval process, Cost share estimates for these contracts exceed
$800,000,

.

The rate of applying salinity reduction and wildlife habitat replacement practices continues to
increase, The major practices installed are sprinkler irrigation systems, improved surface
systems, underground pipelines and gated pipe, In this area, a large number of groups are
replacing earthen laterals with pipelines to provide gravity pressure for onfarm sprinkler
systems, Thirteen center pivot systems were installed in 1994,

Demonstration plot activities continued on Ute Indian Tribal land to: illustrate the benefits of
sprinkler irrigation; teach principles of irrigation scheduling; and provide data on crop
variations, yields, and costs to determine fair market lease agreements, Special emphasis is
being placed on working with individual farmers on principles of irrigation water management.

Follow-up continues on the action items developed to address the concerns identified during
the August 1993 wildlife habitat field review,

The project hosted the Colorado River Basin Salinity Control Forum and Work Group
meetings in mid-May. Forum and Work Group members, local cooperators and other
interested"parties toured the project to review salinity program activities, Other agencies and
small groups also toured the Basin during the year to examine salinity activities in the project.

McElmo Creek, Colorado

Implementation was initiated in this unit in 1990, In 1994, 39 new contracts were approved
for a total of 177 contracts, There are 190 applications pending approval.

.

3
