<br />OJJ712 <br /> <br />, <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />USDA Accomplishments <br /> <br />A new Extension Service specialist transferred to the project in 1994 and SCS is currently <br />advertising for a new District Conservationist. <br /> <br />Grand Valley, Colorado <br /> <br />Implementation has been underway in this unit since 1979. In 1994,70 new contracts were <br />approved for a total of 3,397 CRSC contracts and Agricultural Conservation Program (ACP) <br />salinity/long-term agreements since the program began, There are 16 applications pending <br />approval , <br /> <br />The application of salinity control and wildlife habitat replacement practices continues, <br />Farmers are installing underground pipelines, gated pipe, concrete lined ditches, land leveling, <br />and a variety of other practices, The installation of surge irrigation systems continues to <br />increase, <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />Seventy-eight [urge units were installed by farmers in 1994, A total of 325 surge units have <br />been installed by salinity control participants, Evaluation results show significant reductions in <br />deep percolation from surge irrigation, The surge units provide the participants with the <br />capability of performing fertigation, which involves applying liquid nitrogen fertilizer during <br />the soak stage of irrigation, Acceptance of this practice is an additional incentive for farmers <br />to install surge systems, <br /> <br />The Finding of No Significant Impact was finalized for the Mutual Mesa lateral and the plan <br />for a III acre wildlife area to be used as an outdoor classroom was finalized, <br /> <br />In 1994, the project conducted four tours for foreign students, developed three handout <br />brochures for Spanish speaking irrigators and created a salinity program video in Spanish, <br /> <br />Lower Gunnison Basin, Colorado <br /> <br />This is the largest of the USDA salinity control units and is located in Delta and Montrose <br />counties, Implementation was initiated in 1988 in this unit. During 1994,61 new contracts <br />were approved, for a total of 280 contracts, There are 512 applications pending approval, <br />-:~!: <br /> <br />The application of salinity reduction and wildlife habitat replacement practices is rapidly <br />increasing now that the total Lower Gunnison unit is under implementation, The major <br />practices are underground pipelines, ditch lining, land leveling, irrigation water control <br />structures, gated pipe, sprinkler and surge irrigation systems, <br /> <br />A total of 26 surge units were installed in 1994. A total of 54 surge units have been installed <br />by salinity control participants in the project. The majority of the surge units have been <br />installed by the Bureau of Reclamation and the Extension Service to introduce the surge <br />irrigation concept to the Lower Gunnison project area, <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />2 <br />
