OU2~{9

ILLINOIS

Currently there is no legislatively authorized state rivers protection
program in Illinois. Since 1970 there have been' five at tempts at legislation,
the first of which was proposed by the Department of Conservation, but all have
failed.

.

The state has a law that provides for the issuance of permits by the
Division of Water Resources of the Department of Transportation for proposed
projects in and on the shorelines of rivers, streams and lakes, The Department
of Conservation is asked to comments on these projects,

.

The Division of Water Resources also administers the floodplain management
act which regulates construction on the 100 year floodplain.

The Department of Conservation is presently conducting an inventoy of
streams in Illinois before attempting legislation for a sixth time.

CONTACT: Hr.
