DESCRIPTION

The Lower Hhite River Basin (Dlb4), located in western Rio

Blanco, southern Moffat, and northern Garfield Counties of north-

western Colorado, is a tributary of Green River (Dl). The portion

of the White Fiver Basin with which ,this ~lan is concerned, designated

herein as the "Lower Ya1ite River Basin", is located between the mouth

of Strawberry Creek, about eight miles we~t of Meeker, Colorado, and

,

the Colorado-Utah State line. (See map.) The White River drains

about 5,820 square miles of northwestern Colorado. ~'proximatelY

940 square miles of the 'i/hi te River drainage above the mouth of
11
Strawberry Creek ar~ covered by a previ~~ report.

Therefore,

the drainage area to which this plan relates is 2,880 square m~~~~

Tributary streams originating on the south side of this area head

along the edge of Roan Plateau, while those entering from the north

head along the Yampa Plateau. These tributaries rise at an eleva-

tion of about 9,000 feet above sea level. The parent stream has an

elevation of 6,100 feet at the mouth of Strawberry Creek and descends
\

to 5,400 feet ~t Rangely, ColoradO, and 5,000 feet at the stream

gaging station near Watson, Utah.

Host of the area is rough and mountainous but along some of

the tributaries and along the White River the alluvial, bottom lands

Y "Report upon and Recommendations for Limited Operations within
Upper Vlhi te River Basin, Colorado", Water Utilization Section,
~E, 1941.
