The 1940 Census of Irrigation shows 55,551

acres of land under irrigation in the Colorado portion of the ~mite
y
Hiver Basin. A previous plan for operations in the Upper White
,

River Basin lists 22,000 acres of land under irrigation in the

Upper Viliite River Basin. This would leave about 15,500 acres of

irrigated land for the lower portion of the basin in Colorado. Of

this total, approximately one-half of the irrigated land is located
y' ,
on minor tributaries of the ~mite River. Assuming a consumptive

u~e of 1.4 acre-feet per acre irrigated, the total water use by

irrigation in the lower basin would be approxj~ately 18,900 acre-

feet annually.

Present Land Use

The 15,500 acres of land under irrigation are used to pro-

duce hay and small grains.
