The Board is providing assistance to

local governments in the development and adoption of effective flood-

plain ordinances. In addition, the Board assists and provides finan-

cia1 assistance to floodplain information studies in Colorado.

Objectives and Scope

Because of the rapid development and urbanization in many parts of

Colorado, there is an immediate need to expand flood hazard studies.

Several levels of government, state, local, and federal, as well as

private consulting firms, are engaged in floodplain land use studies.

Additional technical data are needed, especially for preparing or

revising local regulations regarding the use of floodplains.

The objective of flood hazard analyses is to provide information and

mapping to be used in alleviating potential flood damages. The scope

and intensity of investigations vary; and each study is tailored to

meet the 'local, state, and federal requirements. In general, each

study will include a report with information on past floods, flood

potential, flood hazard maps, engineering and hydrologic data, and

interpretations of data needed in developing and implementing flood-

plain manage~ent programs.
