<br />Twenty-ttll'ee Colorado counties were desienated af" drouth disaster areas by
<br />U.S. Agriculture Secretary Benson. Included in the listing "ere Adams, Arapahoe,
<br />Baca, Bent, Cheyenne, Crowley, Custer, Douglas, Elbert, El Paso, Fremont, Jeffer-
<br />son, Boulder, Kiowa, Kit Carson, Larimer, Las Animas, Linooln, Morgan, Otero,
<br />Prowers, Pueblo, and vleJ.d.
<br />Refused such designation were Jack~n and Belta counties. Petitions in the
<br />process were reported in Moffat, Rio Blanoo, Routt, and Washington counties.
<br />Inquiries were received from Chaffee, Conejos, Park, and Montrose counties.
<br />Designations qualify rancr.ers and farmers for emergency loans, reduced freight
<br />rates, low cost surplus livestock feed, and a federal hay-buying program.
<br />Being worked out by the Colorado agrioul ture department welle mechanics of
<br />handling a multi-million dollar hay procurement program to save livestock from
<br />forced liquidation.
<br />Proposed were special county hay-procurement committees to include a county
<br />commissioner, county agent, and banker.........

<br />Schem~led to address the Democratic state convention to be held at the Engle-
<br />wood High School auditorium was former secretary of agriculture Charles F. Bral'U1an.
<br />Slated to attend were 1504 delegates from all of Colorado's 63 counties.
<br />Major contest centered on the three-way struggle between former U.S. Rep.
<br />Jmhn A. carroll, Mayor Quigg Newton of Denver, and State Sen. Lew Williams of
<br />Norwood for the U.S. Senate designation. MOst observors thought Carroll would
<br />gain top designation, followed by Newton, with Williams polling a heavy Western
<br />Slope vote. Chief question in the Williams camp was whether he would gain suf-
<br />ficient voting strength from other secM.ons of the state.
<br />Unmpposed for gubernatorial designation was U.S. Sen. Ed. Johnson. For Lt.
<br />Go~ernor designation candidaaies were by State Sen. Stephen L.R. McNiohols, former
<br />Atty. Gen. pohnMetzger, and David Miller, Greeley attorney. Other candidacies
<br />include~:~t~te4~en. Peter Culig and George Baker; treasurer-James R. Mosier and
<br />Ernst H. 'Sterling; atty. gen.-Charles S. Vigil and EdYlard R. Lundborg; state bd. of
<br />education--Allegra Saunder and Dr. Gilbert Dale, uru>~posed; Univ. of Colo. bd of
<br />reg6mts--J. Vance lustin, rhomas A. Gilliam and Ray !'Ioses.....
<br />Republican state assembly was schedule:!. for July 31 in Colorado Springs at
<br />the ~nicipal auditorium, to be preceded by a rally the night before at the
<br />Broadmoor hotel. Scheduled to address the assembly was a yet-to-be-identified
<br />prominent western governor. Scl.~~uled for this week were county assemblies in
<br />Boulder, Jefferson, Las Animas, Adwns, Park, Conejos, Douglas, Bent, Garfield, Phil-
<br />lips, Pueblo, Morgan, Baca, and Huerfano counties.......
<br />Announced Jefferson county candidates included incumbents Commissioner Clarence
<br />Koch, Clerk Robert Newton, Sheriff Carl Snlow, Assessor Judd Bruns, Supt. Miriam
<br />Martensen, and Coronet Velman Seal; also. Ken Raynie for coroner and Lloyd Beeler
<br />for assessor.... .Anmounced Adams Couhty GOP candidates included Mayor Harvey England
<br />of Westminster for Commissioner; Sheriff Ira Bashor, Coroner I.yle G. Ri.ce, and CJe rk
<br />L. Miller, incumbents......
<br />Announcing his candidacy for a fourth term in the House of Representatives was
<br />Rep. Whitman Best of Denver.......
