<br />. <br /> <br />..... ,\( . <br /> <br /> <br />COLORADO INFORMATION Newsletter - Thursday, July 22, 1954 - Page 4. <br /> <br />The Colorado highway department was named third in traffic engineering ratings <br />for Group IV, the nine-state western area, recently released by the National Safety <br />Council in Chicago. <br />It was topped only by Washington and Oregon in the standing based on traffic <br />engineering work and improvement accon~lished last year. Ratings are part of the <br />NaUonal Safety Council's "Annual ln~entory of Traffic Safety Activities", and <br />considers research, administration, training, marking of roads, installation of <br />lights, and other safety dev:ices and road designing..... <br />The Mt. Evans highway was repo:l:tedly in good shape, with 4/5's of the money <br />allotted by the high...ay department expended. A gravelled, two-lane road to the <br />top of Mount Evans from Smnmit Lake, a distance of five miles, was reported <br />completed llI.thimprovement of the road at Swnmit Lake and the road to the shelter <br />house. The Mt. Justis, DeRMer manager of welfare, was named to top score in examination <br />for the state \lelfare director's position. <br />Others who passed included Victor D. Carlson; Mary N. Gray....... <br />Stats money fer the old-age pensioh fund n~opped $535,82? during the first six <br />months of ~954 as compared with the first half of last year, it was announced. A <br />total of 54,100 persons--down 62 from June--- are eligible to receive pension payments <br />in JuJy. Maximum is $85 ~lith average $72.54. <br />Total state mosey received by the pension fund from earmarked funds was $15,- <br />347,723 c.\'-lung the first half of the year. Revenue accrtrlng, during June was "2,886,- <br />122--up over $200,000 !rom June a year ago...... <br /> <br />------------------------------------------------------------------------- <br /> <br />The National Assoc5.ation of Manufacturers has released figures whowing Colorado <br />gains in pO);lulation, non-agriouJl:.ural employment and per capita inoome during the past <br />12 to 13 years. Their report shows that between 1940 and 1953 Colorado had a 29.6% <br />population increase, 76.1% non-agricultural employment increase; a 211.21 ;~crease <br />in per capita income. <br />These figures compare with averages for the 11 western states, as followsi <br />population increase, 57.3%; non-agricultural employment increase, 87.9%; per capita <br />income increase, 161.9%. Individually, Arizona led the west in population increas~ <br />New Mexico in the other two categories. . <br />The study showed that the west as ,a whole tended to lead the nation in industrial <br />growth as well as population gains; and~a strengthening, independent economic <br />fun t. . ^ <br />C J.orung....... <br /> <br />----------------------------------------------------------------- <br /> <br />Surveys indidated a Denver population of over 500,000 with a metropolitan area <br />population of close to 700,000......Federal employment in Colorado reached 33,075 <br />from a previous figure of 32,934 in the first three months of the year, according to <br />the U.S.Civil Service Commission.....July 1, 1957 has been set by the air force for <br />completion of the new $126 million air force academy near Colorado Springs.
