What is the Clesed Basin Divisien, San Luis Valley Preject? <br /> <br />The Clesed Basin Divisien, eften called the Clesed Basin preject, is a <br />multipurpese water reseurce develepment in seuthern Celerade. It was <br />authorized by Cengress en Octeber 20, 1972, under, Public Law 92-514 and <br />is to. be censtructed by the Bureau ef Reclamatien, Department ef Interiet. <br />I <br /> <br />2. \fuat is the Bureau ef Reclamatien? <br /> <br />The Bureau is an agency ef the United States Department ef the Interier <br />created by Cengr~ss in 1902 to. d~ve1ep water reseurces ef the 17 Western <br />States in ceeperatien with lecal interests. During the last 79 years, <br />the Bureauc has develeped ever 150 multipurpese water prejects. These <br />projects furnish water to. ever 11.4 mil1ien acres ef irrigated land plus <br />municipal and industrial (M&I) water fer, urban areas with an aggregate <br />pepulatien ef nearly .19 mil1ien. ' Generating plants at 50 Bureau dams are <br />capable ef furnishing mere than IO,.4 millien kilewatts ef electrical <br />pewer. In additien, these same prejects previde fleed centrel benefits, <br />public recreatien areas, and pretectien and enhancement ef fish and <br />wildlife reseurces. <br /> <br />3. What Purpese will the Clesed Basin Preject Serve? <br /> <br />It"is designed to. salvage a pertien ef the greundwater, new mestly wasted <br />by evaperatien. The,water will be pumped and delivered by cenveyance <br />channel fer discharge into. the Rio. Grande seutheast ef Alamesa, Celerade. <br />Delivery'ef this water will assist the State ef Celerade in meeting its <br />cemmitments fer water deliveries to. the States ef New l1exico and Texas <br />under the Rio. Grande Cempact and will also. assist the United States in <br />meeting its cemmitments to. Mexico. under the Rio Grande Cenventien ef <br />1906. The preject will also. previde fish and wildlife enhancement by <br />water deliveries to the Alamesa Natienal Wildlife Refuge, establishment <br />ef an additienal ,Wildlife Refuge and stabilizatien ef the water level <br />in San Luis Lake. ' <br /> <br />4. What are the "Vital Statistics" ef the preject? <br /> <br />The preject is scheduled fer develepment in stages ever a 10-year peried. <br />During this time, about 170 water wells will be drilled with an estimated, <br />100 miles ef buried pipeline delivering water to. the cenveyance channel. <br />The cenveyance channel will be appreximately 42 miles leng and has the <br />capability to deliver appreximately 100,000 acre-feet ef water annually <br />to. the Rio. Grande. <br />
