0-0.2-8 8 2

The analysis indicates that the financially efficient timber stands are those
classified as spruce-fir, sawtimber size (greater than nine inches diameter at
breast height), on less than liOJ slopes. The harvest methods identified are
the clearcut system in one to five acre patches, and the three step shelterwood
system. Certain aspen stands within 1 mile of an existing road and on slopes
less than liOJ are also financially efficient. Harvest method identified in the
clearcut system on areas 21 - liO acres in size.

REMOVE SECTION TITLED "Demand Trends" (FEIS PAGE 111-91 TO 111-92) AlID REPLACE
WITH THE FOll.OWING:

DEMAND TRENDS

Current Demands - Studies indicate current total demand for the Forest's
conifer products ranges from 6.18 million cubic feet (MMCF) (26.55 MBF) to
11.617 MMCF (51.718 MMBF). The low end represents what the Forest has
historically harvested and the upper end represents what the local operators
and mills have said they harvested from the Forest, according to the Colorado
State Forest Service Study titled "Demand for Forest Products From the
Gunnison, Grand Mesa, and Uncompahgre National Forest Area. (Hereafter referred
to as the CSFS Demand Study.)

The best estimate of current conifer sawtimber demand is li.68 MMCF (21.07 MMBF)
per year. Conifer-sawtimber harvest volumes have increased substantially over
the last three years. This is largely due to Blue Mesa' Forest Products
Corporation renovating their mill.

Current aspen sawtimber demand is .36 MMCF (1.63 MMBF) per year.
for aspen sawtimber is small when compared to other products.
mills in the North Fork valley produce aspen dimension products.
for aspen sawtimber has not changed.

The demand
A few small
The demand

Historical non-waferwood conifer products other than logs (POL) demand is .710
MMCF (2.8li MMBF) per year. The demand for other conifer POL is small. Conifer
POL products include posts, poles, and mine props. The demand is strictly
local and has not significantly changed recently.

The demand for waferwood POL has qhanged dramatically in the last three years
since new industry arrived in the planning area. Current demand is not
precisely known although it is believed to be somewhat less than 8.00 MMCF
annually. Most of the material utilized by new industry has been coming from
private land. This is partially due to the appeals of the Forest Aspen
Management Program. Industry indicates that the private land supply is now
exhausted.

15
