ANALYSIS OF THE MANAGEMENT SITUATION

CHAPTER I II
AFFECTED ENVIRONMENT

This chapter is the beginning of Chapter III of the Draft Supplemental EIS.
Therefore, the tables and figures refer to Chapter III even though this is, in
reality, Chapter II of the Analysis of the Management Situation (AMS).

The material in this chapter updates, clarifies, and improves information in
Chapter III of the FEIS.

OVERVIEW

(FEIS PAGE 1II-1; NO CHANGE)

PHYSICAL AND BIOLOGICAL SETTING

VEGETATION

r
I

ADD TIlE FOLLOWING TO FEIS PAGE III-5 AT TIlE END OF SECTION TInED "Aspen":

Table 0.1 identifies tentatively suitable aspen timberland by three classes by
slope. These classes were developed to answer issues concerning aspen
management. Self-regenerating aspen has two or more distinct age classes with
an understory greater than 1,000 stems per acre. Aspen with conifer invasion
is recognized by the presence of two or more distinct age classes of conifer in
the stand. Predominately aspen exhibits neither signs'of conifer invasion nor
signs of self-regeneration. It is typically an even-aged, single storied
stand. Each aspen class responds differently in achieving multiple-use
benefits.

I

TABLE 0.1

TENTATIVELY SUITABLE ASPEN BY CLASS AND SLOPE

Slope

Aspen Classes

Less than
40 ~
184,830
94,376
74,542
353,748

Greater Than
40 ~
15,758
9,899
5,297
30,954

'7
'J- .
II- :,]

-Predominately
-Conifer-Invaded
-Self-Regenerating
Subtotals

Total

384,702

7
