As you use the application you
may notice two differences in the application's layout.

Unlike most programs that run under Windows, the various dialog sub-win-
dows of SPWRMS are not constrained within the boundaries of the main
application window. For example, users can display the communication
timer window out of the way in a comer of the screen, while viewing stream-
flow hydrographs in the screen's center with the main SPWRMS menu bar
along the bottom of the screen (see Figure 3-1). The application was
designed to allow the user maximum flexibility for viewing many windows
within the small screen area of a laptop computer .

The application's main menu bar contains the following pulldown menus:

.File provides an exit from the application

Edit provides editing capabilities for application data

Query provides read-only access to application data

What If? provides scenario testing for setting and releasing river calls

Help provides information on application version number

3.2 Using the Pulldown Menus

3.2.1 Greyed out items

Cenain controls on the SPWRMS interface may at times be disabled.
For example: if you are already connected via modem to a remote
host. the Dial option under the Communications menu appears
greyed out. When a menu item or dialog button is greyed, the func-
tionality represented by that control is not available.

3.2.2 Accelerators

SPWRMS provides a number of keyboard shoncuts for menu items.
These are called accelerators. Accelerator combinations are desig-
nated on the screen by underlined letters. The underline in this con.

5

7/31/94
