0'0'258 ~

CONTRACTOR: National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration,
Boulder, Colorado
CONTRACT NO. 8-07-83-VOOI6
PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATORS: William L. Woodley and Cecilia'G. Griffith
PERIOD: December 1,1977 - Continuing
FUNDING: FY78 - $43,500

The contract goal is to develop a technique to estimate rainfall over
the High Plains using digital, geosynchronous, visible, and infrared
satellite imagery. This technique will be used to estimate rainfall
at the three HIPLEX sites, and estimate~ will be compared with
observed values. Five continental rainfall cases have been examined
using the algorithm derived by NOAA for tropical convective clouds.
This relationship was used as a starting point for the HIPLEX studies
and will ,be modified after initial tests to incorporate specific
weather features encountered in the High Plains.

A technique developed for use in tropical and semitropical locations
is being assessed for application to the High Plains by comparing
satellite-derived rain estimates to rain gage measurements at the
three HIPLEX sites. In another study, a computer program produces
statistics on cloud history and behavior for analysis. Cooperative
studies are being conducted to examine variations between similar
programs developed by Colorado State University and the University of
North Dakota.

L

i

CONTRACTOR: Particle Measuring Systems, Boulder, Colorado
CONTRACT NO. 8-07-81-50025
PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR: Not applicable
PERIOD: Apri 1 1978
FUNDING: FY78 - $47,000

,

The contractor provided a two-dimensional, optical array, particle
size spectrometer for use at the Montana HIPLEX site. This instru-
ment measures drop size distributions within a cloud.

CONTRACTOR: University of Arizona, Tucson, Arizona
CONTRACT NO. 8-07-83-VOOI8
PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR: Kenneth C. Young
PERIOD: May 15, 1978 - Continuing
FUNDING: FY78 - $3,280

The contract objective is to investigate proper dry ice seeding
rates for rainfall augmentation in High Plains cumulus congestus
clouds. Work is aimed at determining optimal dry ice seeding rates
for cumulus clouds at Miles City. In addition, a computer model will
be used in conjunction with field observations to assess the model's
validity. No conclusions are available to date.

II 1-34
