MONTHLY EEPORT
SAN LUIS VALLEY PROJECT. COLORADO
NOVEMBER 1955

~io Grande Division

Rel'roduoibles of drawings which will be required in the
revision of this report were sent to the Regional office during the
fOre part of October.

On the evening of October 13, the Projeot 1wnager attended
the regular monthly meeting of the Board of Directors of the San Luis
Valley Water Conservancy District at AllllllOsa, Colorado. The Board
decided to arrange meeUngs with the Bosrds of Directors of the
Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District, the Elephant Butte Irrigation
District, and the El Faso County Water Improvement District. The
purpose of the meetings is to discuss water oonditions along the Rio
Grande and, if possible, obtain the support of the New Medco and
Texas people in seouring construotion of Wagon Wheel Gap Dam and
Reservoir at an early date.

During the last week of October Dr. Robert Whitney and
Mr. William Franklin, of Colorado A 8< 11 College, applied the laet
watering of the season to the Mosca-Hooper Experimental Plots.

Closed Basin Division

Measurements were made of the ground water fluctUlltion at
several seleoted wells during the month.

During the month samples of water ware taken at wells to
determtne the approximate qua.l1ty at the water. An apProximation of
the quality can be ascertained by measurement of the oonductance.
This is besed on requirements of the Rio Grenda Compact and the app-
arent fact that water from the Closed Basin which could possibly be
delivered to the Ri.o Grande must have total dtsllolved solids of 350
parts per million or less. If the T.D.S. runs over this amount then,
in prsctioally all oaaes, the percentege of sodium ion concentration
generally runs well over the maximum sllowed for credit by the Com-
pact. Conductanoe measurements of samples taken w<lre so erratic antl
at variance with previous tests that assistanoe 'lies sought. Colo-
rado A 8< M Colloge has undertaken to re-platinize end clelln up our
conductivity cell. On a visit to the Chief Engineer's Laboratories
the procedure to be followed in malting conduotance tests was reviewed
and recommendations given. A standard KCl solution wns propared for
our use by the Laboratory.

\)\)191~
