002852

Burial of Structures by Debris

This is usually the result of debris flows earthflows or translational
landslides. These events can strike either with great speed and force, or by
slow. engulfment. Structures can be destroyed as well as lives lost. In
addition, utilities can be damaged or destroyed.

Earth Dam With Backwater Flooding

Results include 1) flooding upstream; lake formation inundates valuable crop,
range, or recreation areas; floods structures (commercial, residential), 2)
cuts off transportation routes (road, railroad) affecting commerce, tourism,
and emergency vehicle access; affects ability of locals to get to work, 3)
loss of revenue to communities due to loss of tourism and local business
access; loss of tax revenue from flooded lands, and 4) cuts off utilities:
water, gas, electric, and communications.

Form and Fail Dam With Downstream Flooding

A landslide dam break would result in flooding downstream with possible loss
of life and extensive property destruction.

- 67 -
