002851

Increased Sediment Load

Landslides and debris flows into. streams or rivers add vast quantities of
sediment and bedload to the water system. This can 1) silt-up reservoirs,
resulting in loss of storage capacity, 2) cause damage to pumps for water
intakes, 3) diminish water quality for drinking, 4) kill fish, fish eggs, and
destroy fishing areas (resulting in loss of revenue), and 5) cause degradation
in crop land when silt decreases permeability.

Road/Railroad Blockage (total)

Total blockage will prevent traffic flow and affect 1) workers' ability to
commute, 2) access of emergency vehicles, and 3) the normal flow of commerce.

Bridge Destruction

Bridge destruction has the same effect as total road blockage.
pieces of the bridge may eventually cause channel blockage and
backwater flooding.

In addition,
result in

Damage to Underground and Surface Mining Facilities

Surface dislocation can impact both surface and subsurface mining operation by
1) affecting the working surface, 2) blocking entry. ways, and 3) disrupting
haulage roads, adits, air shafts, etc.

Utility Damage (sewer, water, power, gas pipelines)

Results of utility damage include 1) loss of life due to explosion of gas
lines, 2) loss of service, 3) loss of revenue, and 4) costs of repair.

Ground Surface and Structure Dislocation

Such dislocation can cause 1) utility damage, 2) crop damage, 3) irrigation
ditch damage, 4) road blockage, 5) bridge destruction, 6) loss of life, 7)
loss of service, 8) loss of revenue, and 9) create potential toxic waste
hazard if it involves chemical storage tanks, or fire/explosion hazards in
cases of gas or liquid energy fuels.

- 66 -
