.

.

PROPOSED BLACK CANYON NATIONAL PARK AND
SCENIC RECREATION AREA

Proposed Curecanti National Recreation Area

Congressman Strang proposes to designate the Curecanti
National Recreation Area as a unit of the Proposed Black Canyon
National Park and Scenic Recreation Area.

As a feature of the Colorado River Storage Project Act
authorization in 1956, the Curecanti National Recreation Area has
been an administrative designation. As part of the Wayne N.
Aspinall Storage Project, Curecanti has been operated by the
National Park Service under a 1965 cooperative agreement with the
Bureau of Reclamation and a 1966 cooperative agreement with the
National Forest Service. In 1983, the NPS proposed legislation
to affirm those agreements by formal legislative recognition of
the Curecanti National Recreation Area and its boundaries. The
area encompasses a total of 40,124 acres of federal lands.

*****

~~
~~
#
