Congressman Strang proposes to merge these five units
into the "Black Canyon National Park and Scenic Recreation Area."
The proposal seeks to maintain the individual identities of the
three existing units, while adding to them the Gunnison Gorge
Recreation Lands and the proposed Lower Gunnison Wild and Scenic
River.

The Black Canyon itself is the geologic focal point that
ties all the units together. Nowhere in the U.S is there a
single, complete canyon system included in a park complex such as
that being proposed by Congressman Strang. That unique quality,
plus the variety of other attractive recreational opportunities
available in the proposed 131.000 acre complex, provides a
nationally significant recreation resource that has the potential
of increasing regional and national tourist recognition and use
of the area. Properly packaged and promoted, the proposal offers
long-range economic benefits to the three county area and beyond.
