Bill Armstrong (R-Colo.) today led members of <br /> <br />the Colorado and New Ilexico Ccngressional delegations in formally transmitting <br /> <br />and endorsing a oost sharing/finanoing proposal reaohed by agreement of <br /> <br />numerous state, looal and Indian interests to build the Animas-La Plata water <br /> <br />projeot in southwestern Colorado. <br /> <br />"When one considers the diversity of voices, issues and states involved in <br /> <br />the Animas-La Plata issue, this oost sharing agreement is truly historio," <br /> <br />Armstrong said. "This project is long overdue and I oommend the state, tribal <br /> <br />and looal leaders in producing this oost sharing agreement." <br /> <br />In a letter delivered to Seoretary of the Interior Donald Hodel today, the <br /> <br />Colorado and New Mexioo delegations formally submitted and unanimously endorsed <br /> <br />the proposal forged by the States of Colorado and New Mexioo, the Ute Mountain <br /> <br />Ute and Southern Ute Indian Tribes, and water interests in southwest Colorado <br /> <br />and northern New Mexico to fund construction of the long delayed project with <br /> <br />an unprecedent.ed offer of state and looal oost sharing. <br /> <br />In February, the Bureau of Reolamation revised cost estimates of the <br /> <br />Animas-La Plata project, with an unheard of reduotion in project costs by $68.6 <br /> <br />million, leaving the estimated costs of the projeot at $553.6 million. <br /> <br />- -more-- <br /> <br />'" <br />
