,.

.

.

A contract for the construction of the Bonny Dam and access road was
aWar~ed to the Utah Construction Company of San Francisco, California, on
November 4, 1948. Notice to proceed with the work was received by the
contractor on December 7, 1948, and since a period of 1400 days was allowed
in the spee1fications for the completion of the work, the contraot comple-
tion date was set as October 7, 1952. On December 8, 1948, actual con-
struction was begun and the dam and access road were completed and aocepted
by the Bureau of Reclamation on May 4, 1951, 521 days ahead of schedule.
Because it was impossible for Bureau personnel assigned to Bonny Dam
to find sufficient private housing within commuting distance of .the dam,
housing was proVided at St. Francis, Kansas, 29 miles from the dam. Accom~
modations for 24 families were built by the Bureau from prefabricated
barracks buildings moved from the McCook Air Base, McOlok, Nebraska, and
converted into six houses and six apartment buildings containing three
apartments each. Water, sewerage, and electrical facilities for the
buildings were installed under contract. The contractors provided housing
for their men in the form of a 52-unit trailer camp, bunkhouses, and a
restaurant at Hale, Cclorado; 8 houses at Burlington, Colorado; a 50-unit
trailer camp and a bunkhouse at Burlington, Colorado; and a dormitory in
Idalia, Colorado. Other Bureau and contractor personnel found their own
housing in nearby towns.
Additional prefabricated barracks buildings were converted to proVide
warehouse and office space for the Bureau at St. Francis, Kansas, and a
field office was constructed under contract at the damsite. The field
office, designed for later use as a residence for the caretaker, was
oompleted in August 1949. During the period of construction of the
dam, it waS used as a field office and laboratory, but now that the

2496

2
