STOCKING POLICY FOR WHIRLING DISEASE

The Division and Commission is committed to the development of a long-tenn policy which will guide
future stocking of hatchery-reared trout which carry whirling disease. The attached paper describes the
proposed process by which this policy will be developed.

The process will include a discussion at the May Commission meeting. A draft policy wili be presented
at the September meeting and a final policy will be approved at the November Commission meeting.
Public input will be obtained throughout the entire process and a "'stakeholders" committee will be
established. This committee will serve to provide input to the Division in development of the
recommended policy. The committee will be composed of unaffiliated anglers; organized groups; land
management agencies; business interests; private trout growers and others.

It is my objective to develop and implement a policy which will protect the well-being of Colorado's
fishery resourc!'s, while maintaining angling recreation and related benefits.

I have assigned the responsibility of coordinating this process to the Aquatic Section and to Eddie
Kochman in particular.

We will look forward to the initial discussion in May.
