<br />OO~331 <br /> <br />'_~ r <br /> <br />; <br />, <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />-2- <br /> <br />Filter 2, Water Resource Development--This filter is designed to identify <br />those river segments which are free of existing impoundments or other <br />alterations such as channelization, straightening, dikes, and levees. <br />This determination is made by use of Corps of Engineers Water Resource <br />Booklets, Soil Conservation Service Reports, Federal Energy Regulatory <br />Commission Reports, Bureau of Reclamation Reports, and USGS 7~- and 15- <br />minute quad sheets. Segments containing such water resource developments <br />are eliminated from further consideration. Remnant segments between or <br />above or below development are retained if they are 5 miles or longer in <br />length. <br /> <br />Filter 3, Cultural Deve1opment--This filter serves to identify river <br />segments significantly impacted by manmade developments. The area of <br />influence is considered to be ~ mile on each side of the river bank. <br />Cultural developments are located on quad sheets, county highway maps, <br />and, where necessary, aerial photos; scored according to an assigned <br />point system; and river segments over 100 points per mile are eliminated. <br />Again, remaining segments over 5 miles in length are retained. <br /> <br />Filter 4, Input by Experts--At this point the list of rivers remaining <br />is circulated among government officials, private organizations, and <br />individuals who are knowledgeable about the river resources. This is <br />done in order t~ further eliminate, or retrieve previously eliminated, <br />river segments as a result of the knowledge of these individuals. This <br />is accomplished through mail-outs and Statewide or areawide workshops. <br /> <br />Filter 5, Aerial Survey--Approximately 20 percent of the total river <br />mileage in each physiographic section will be examined by helicopter <br />and documented by video tape or color slides. These will be the river <br />segments that at that point are determined to be the most natural <br />within each section. <br /> <br />Filter 6, Post Flight River Evaluation--This filter is used to compare <br />rivers within a given physiographic area to determine the most repre- <br />sentative or outstanding river segments. River resource information is <br />recorded (where necessary, assistance is requested from specialists in <br />gathering necessary data) for each river segment, and this information <br />is used to establish a priority list of rivers. <br /> <br />POTENTIAL FUTURE USES <br /> <br />The result of this inventory will be a list, by physiographic s~ction, <br />of the most natural free-flowing rivers nationwide. While it will <br />assist the Department of the Interior in making decisions related to <br />the Wild and Scenic Rivers System, it will serve also as a centralized <br /> <br />r <br />
