I

001361

/

There are many rioh agriou1tura1 lands underlaid with
shallow water wi thin a 200 mile radius of this power
site# which oou1d be developed with cheap power.
This' would include the areas within the Valley of
the Little Colorado River, and would include the
areas under pumps In the Salt River Valley and the
lower Santa Cruz Valley. Within the last year it
has been necessary for the Salt River Valley Project
to install Diesel plants to meet the growing demand
within the Salt River Valley Proj 60-t. It has also
been neoessary for a. Diesel plant -to be installed to
augment the energy supplied from Coolidge Dalll, whioh
is used for pumping in the Casa Grande Va.lley. There."
are innumerable other small potential pumping distriots
within this 200 mile radius. This power site is with~
in 80 miles of the present Boulder Project.

The Los Angeles Bureau of Light and Power has recently
secured a oontraot from -the Department of Interior for
the construction of a third oirouit to transmit the
unused portion of the Metropolitan Wll:ter Distriot' s
allocated energy. When the Metropolitan Water Distriot
uses a.ll of its allocated energy, exoess and unused
firm energy from this power site oould be transmitted
over the third circuit to the Los Angeles Bureau of
Light and. Power, thus reduoing tho amount of steam
plant stand-by energy needed in Los Angeles to a
minimum.

If Arizona uses any Boulder energy in excess of 10,000
horsepower, every kilowatt so used will bear a penal~
for the equipment rendered idle causod by the with-
drawal of this energy fran tho existing lines in
Caliiornia. This fact alono creates an inequality
whioh, together with the cost of transmission, justifies
the development of power for use in Arizona, oouthern
Nevada and southwestern Uta.h, which would be free
from such penalties.

It is a.n assured fact that# within the timEl required to
make the necossary investigations, surveys, and studies-
a.t this site, there will exist a market for this power
probably in excess of the energy available.. This
development is logically the noxt hydroelectric power
site in the dovelopment of tho Colorado River Basin.

10.
