n '" 706
v I.! ~ :J)

2522.12c

.

TITLE 2500 - WATERSHED MANAGEMENT

e

2522.1 - Watershed Improvement Activities. Watershed
improvement activities are land treatments or management
measures implemented to improve watershed condition.

2522.11 - Watershed Condition Improvement. Install land
treatment and structural measures to reduce erosion,
stabilize land mass movement, and provide for favorable
conditions of water flow. Measures include vegetative and
mechanical sheet erosion control; rehabilitation of aban-
doned roads and trails; streambank, gUlly, and lakeshore
stabilization; stream channel clearing, sediment basin
construction and other activities designed to stabilize
watersheds.

2522.12 - Water Yield Enhancement. Water yield enhancement
includes the fOllowing activltles:

e

2522.l2a - MOdified Timber Harvest. Modification of timber
harvest techniques can lnfluence the deposition and melt of
snow. When developing timber harvest plans in water short
areas, consider mOdifying harvest procedures to increase
water yields. Where Forest plans indicate both a need for
increased water and available storage to recover the
increased yield, evaluate opportunities to enhance existing
water supplies. Implement enhancement practices only if
cost-effective, environmentally feasible, and consistent
with other resource uses and values. ___

e

2522.12b - Weather Modification. Support properly designed
and technically sound snow augmentation or other weather
modification activities carried out by cooperators, pro-
vided those activities and anticipated results are consis-
tent with any applicable law or regulation governing the
administration and management of National Forest System
lands. See FSM 2323.44 for weather modification policy
over wilderness.

2522.12c - Type Conversion. Do not permit the conversion
of vegetative types for the purpose of increasing water
yields, until such is proved to be environmentally sound,
cost effective, and can meet the objectives of National
Forest Management.

e

*-FSM 3/86 AMEND 48-*
