<br />TITLE 2500 - WATERSHED MANAGEMENT

<br />4. Clarke-McNary Act of June 7, 1924, as Amended, (43
<br />Stat. 653). Tnis act authorizes the Secretary of Agri-
<br />culture to determine the location of public lands that are
<br />chiefly valuable for streamflow protection and that can be
<br />economically administered as parts of National Forests,
<br />
<br />5. Bankhead Jones Farm Tenant Act of JUly 22, 1937, as
<br />Amended. (7 U.S,C. 1010-1012). This act directs the
<br />~ecretary of Agriculture to develop a program of land con-
<br />servation and land use to correct maladjustments in land
<br />use and thus assist in controlling soil erosion, mitigating
<br />floods, preventing impairments of dams and reservoirs, con-
<br />serving surface and subsurface moisture, protecting the
<br />watersheds of navigable streams, and protecting the public
<br />lands, health, safety, and welfare. Land Utilization
<br />Project lands, now largely included in National Grasslands
<br />and National Forests, were acquired under this act prior to
<br />the repeal of land acquisition authority by the act of
<br />October 23, 1962.

<br />6. Watershed Protection and Flood Prevention Act (P,L.
<br />566) of August 4, 1954, as Amended, (68 Stat, 666, 16
<br />U.S.C. 1001). Tnis act authorlzes the Secretary of
<br />Agriculture to cooperate with the States and their polit-
<br />ical sUbdivisions and local public agencies in preventing
<br />watershed damages from erosion, floodwater, and sediment
<br />and in furthering the conservation, development, utili-
<br />zation, and disposal of water. The act also authorizes the
<br />Secretary to cooperate with other Federal, State, and local
<br />agencies in making investigations and surveys of the water-
<br />sneds of rivers and other waterways as a basis for planning
<br />and developing coordinated programs, and to pursue addi-
<br />tional wor~b of improvement on the 11 watersheds authorized
<br />by the Flood Control Act of December 22, 1944, as amended,

<br />7. Federal Water Pollution Control Act of July 9,
<br />1956, as Amended. (33 U.S,C, 1151,) The purpose of this
<br />act is to ~nhance the quality and value of the water
<br />resource, and to establish a national policy for the
<br />prevention, control, and abatement of water pollution.
<br />Among the important provisions are authority for the State
<br />and Federal Governments to establish waterq~ality stan-
<br />dards; provision for water pOllution grants for research
<br />and development, control programs, construction of treat-
<br />ment works, and comprehensive programs for water pollution
