.'.
/
.

008535

Because of the limited available water, and the increased

need for municipal and industrial water, the scalc of project irrigation

development as now proposed has been rcduced considerably from that

shown in the feasibility report.

~

The project was previously planncd to supply supplcmental

water for about 15,000 acrcs of prcsently irrigated lands and a full

water supply for 8,700 acres of arable new land, Recent studies

indicate that much of the presently irrigated land now has essentially

a full water supply and that only 5,000 to 6,000 acres sre in need of

additional water from the project.

Because of the increased need for municipal and industrial

water, hydraulic pumping of water from Ridgway Reservoir to Log Hill

Mesa for irrigation is no longer planned. A smaller electrical pump

is now planned to deliver water from Dallas Creek to Log Hill Mesa at

a point where the water would be usable either for irrigation or M & I

use, It is now planned that only 4,000 to 5,000 acres of new lands

will be served project water.

With the site originally selected for Ridgway Reservoir the

town of Ridgway and about 2,900 acres of privately owned land would

have been inundated, Recent developments in the reservoir area and

Federal legislation concerning acquisition of, and payment for,

rights-of-way have resulted in substantial increases in the estimated cost

of right-of-way for the reservoir site. Objections were voiced concerning

.

the required relocation of Ridgway and the mud flats that would be

crea~ at the upper end of the flat, wide basin during reservoir draw

down.

4
