Stabilize Metropolitan Denv('r's Population as Soon as Pos- <br />sible <br /> <br />Stabilization of Metropolitan Denver's population is <br />advocated by many individuals and groups that are not par- <br />ticularly concerned with the state as a whole. <br /> <br />Benefits: <br /> <br />Substantial lessening of pressures that <br />are produGing Denver's "big city" prvb- <br />lems and also lessening of pressures on <br />environment "within weekend distance" of <br />Denver. <br /> <br />Detriments: Levelling of economic activity may occur <br />with stultifying consequences. Also, <br />mechanisms are undesirable. <br /> <br />Mechanisms: Tighten land use controls and exert con- <br />trol over water and other utility con- <br />nections, particularly for new apartme~ts, <br />office buildings, and industrial plants. <br /> <br />Question for Proponents: <br /> <br />What are the long term sociological and economic <br />consequences for a community that becomes an <br />island with a fixed population in a state or <br />nation that has a growing population? <br /> <br />-6- <br />
