.

.

f

Located within the District's boundaries are the
principal bodies of developed irrigated land within the prin-
cipal tributaries of the South Platte River and the valley
of the main South Platte River itself, from the City of
Greeley to the Nebraska State line. The District's western
boundary parallels the foothills of the Rocky Mountains
from the southern limits of the City of Boulder to a point
about 20 miles northwest of the City of Fort Collins. The
total area of the District is nearly 1,500,000 acres, and
it includes portions of Boulder, Larimer, Weld, Morgan,
Logan, Washington, and Sedgwick Counties. Approximately
750,000 acres of land within the District boundaries are
irrigated from water supplies originating from streams
located in the above areas and from supplemental water
supplies imported from the head waters of the Colorado
River by the District and others. Total population of
this District is in excess of 350,000 people.

The Northern Colorado Water Conservancy District
was formed for the purpose of representing the water users
of northeastern Colorado in negotiations with the United
States Bureau of Reclamation and to sponsor the construction,
operation and maintenance, and financing of the Colorado-Big
Thompson Project. This project consists of a collection and
storage system on the western slope including Willow Creek
Reservoir, Granby Reservoir, Shadow Mountain Reservoir, and
Green ~ountain Reservoir. It also utilizes Grand Lake
for the carriage of water to the mouth of the Adams Tunnel,
a 9 foot 9 inch diameter tunnel which carries the water
through the Continental Divide to northeastern Colorado. It
should be emphasized that Lake Granby and Shadow Mountain
Reservoir were constructed as a part of a water supply project

-2-
