<br />" <br /> <br />, <br /> <br />l.,': <br /> <br />COLORADO WATER CONSERVATION BOARD <br />823 state Centennial Building <br />1313 Sherman Street <br />Denver, Colorado 80203 <br /> <br />November, 1977 <br /> <br />LIMON PROJECT <br /> <br />INTRODUCTION <br /> <br />The town of Limon is located in Lincoln County and is approxi- <br /> <br />mately 85 miles southeast of Denver. <br /> <br />It was founded in the late <br /> <br />1880's primarily due to the fact that the Union Pacific Railroad and <br /> <br />the Rock Island Railroad junctioned there. These two railroad comp- <br /> <br />anies provided the impetus for growth in the area and in 1909 the town <br /> <br />of Limon was incorporated. The livelihood of the town today depends <br /> <br />mainly on tourism and providing goods and services to the surrounding <br /> <br />agricultural community. <br /> <br />PROBLEM <br /> <br />The water supply for Limon is from wells which pump from the Big <br /> <br />Sandy Creek alluvium. The present wells are incapable of meeting the <br /> <br />demand and as a result the town officials have had to impose severe <br /> <br />restrictions on all summer irrigation. <br /> <br />In addition, there have been <br /> <br />instances when there wasn't even adequate water for showering in some <br /> <br />of the motels. Furthermore, the existing well water exceeds the maxi- <br /> <br />mum allowable quantities of total solids and sulfate per the State <br /> <br />Heal th Department st:andards. <br /> <br />In addition to the problems outlined above, the town needs to <br /> <br />243~ <br />
