2,1.9 Bridge at V.S, Highway 285

Concern:

Highway 285 bridge restricts the flow causing additional
water to back up and put increased stress on the Monte Vista
dike. If some type of conveyance channel could be built, the
chances of a large volume of water being backed up behind
Highway 285 and the dike could be reduced.

Findings:

The bridge consists of two 100 foot spans. With 1,700
cfs flow, there was only about five feet of clearance and half
of this area is filled in with mud and debris.

Rio Grande county has made a survey of the road
embankment south of the bridge to investigate the feasibility
of installing culverts or a concrete box culvert,
