Legal and/or administrative protection - the degree to <br />which the area is reserved from encroachment by industrial <br />or residential developments. <br /> <br />5. Legal and/or administrative restrictions to public use - <br />consider both positive and nep.ative effects. (i.e., overuse <br />may be detrimental to the resources, whereas too many <br />restrictions may oreclude satisfaction of recreation demands.) <br /> <br />6. Physical protection - the degree of change exoected to <br />occur as a result of natural processes, considering the <br />amount of land mana~ement practices expected. <br /> <br />4.4.8 Archeological Re~Eurces <br /> <br />This category considers those material remains such as occupation sites, <br /> <br />work areas, evidence of farminp, or hunting and gathering,burial sites, <br /> <br />artifacts, and structures of all types of past human life and <br /> <br />'activities during prehistoric periods (or during historic periods for <br /> <br />.whieh only vestiges remain). An example of a high-value area would be <br /> <br />a State or National Monument or Park, such as Ires a Verde National <br /> <br />Park, that preserves and develops archeological resources. <br /> <br />(A) Quantity factors: <br /> <br />1. Total number of sites listed in the National Register of <br />Historic Places, with locations and descriptions. <br /> <br />2. Total number of sizable structural remains, such as <br />Anasazi ruins in the Southwest or burial and temple mounds <br />with locations and descriptions. <br /> <br />3. Total number of other occuoation sites, such as vestiges <br />of substantial structures, pithouses, campsites, mounds or <br />middens" quarrying nnd work sites, or sites p,ivinp: evi,lence <br />of ap:ricultural, huntinp:, or other prehistoric use, with <br />locations and descriptions (if p:reat quantities of certain <br />types exist, summary descriptions and locations). <br /> <br />4-21 <br />
