An examination of fed-
erally assisted low and moderate income housing in the
Denver community clearly illustrates an imbalance in the
provision of social services. In Febl"u'Iry of 1971, there
were 8,241 federally assisted low and moderate income
housing units in Adams, Arapahoe, Denver and Jefferson
Counties. Although Denver comprised less than half of the
population for the four-county area, the core city pro-
vides 7,607 units or over 92 percent of the total low and
moderate income housing:

No. Units
Federally Assisted Low Percent
County & Moderate Income Housing of Total
Adams 124 1. 50%
Arapahoe 157 1.57
Denver 7,607 92.31
Jefferson 353 4.28
TOT AL 8,241 100.00%

Needless to say, the domination of low cost housing
in Denver probably increases the welfare burden relative to
that of the adjacent suburban counties. For example, Den-
ver's public assistance cases amount to 73.53 percent of
the cases in the four-county area.

y

Advisory Commission on Intergovernmental Relations,
"Urban America and the Federal System," m-47, pages 9
and 10.

-12-
