00130J

.

.

Gunnison (county seat ot Gunnison County) northwest tor 15 miles up

Ohio Creak. By means ot a di tch, supplied by the Coal Creek outlet of

Lake Brennan, with headgate just below Irwin, releases trom Lake Brennan

could be carried to Ohio Pass at the head ot Ohio Creek. The only impor-

tant structure would be a siphon one-half mile long across the valley ot

Coal. Creek.

The advantage ot using Lake Brennan storage, ted to Ohio Creek

valley by way ot Ohio Pass, lies in the tact that Ohio Creek valley is

divided into an upper and a lower valley by a shallow gorge at a rail-

road siding called Hinkle 10 miles northwest of Gunnison. All return

flow trom irrigation in the upper valley is gathsred at this gorge and

brought back into the stream where it becomes available tor rediversion

in the lower valley. Return flow trom meadow hey lands being on the order

ot 70-80~, the stored water would be very etfective and would supply a

much larger area than is possible under other conditions or with other

Cil10ps.

.

There are, as yet, almost no records ot stream tlow or ot ir-

rigation use on Ohio Creak. When such records are obtained by the Bureau

ot Reclamation which is now collecting them, along with studies ot storage

possibilities on Castle Creek and Mill Creek, tributaries of Ohio Creek,

and at Hinkle on Ohio Creek itself, it may appear that the development ot

Lake Brennan storage tor use on Ohio Creek would ultimately be greatly

changed trom that now contemplated, but there is little doubt that water

must be brought to tho Ohio Creak area trom other sources, and Lake Bren-

nan seams the likeliest ot any.

-e-
