<br />001798 <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />roMMAHY AND CONCLUSIONS <br /> <br />The town of Crested But+.e, located near the center of the <br /> <br /> <br />north boundary of Gunnison County, is a very old coal camp, which from <br /> <br /> <br />time to time has had metal mining booms also. Its population has been <br /> <br /> <br />nearly static for many years and promises to remain substantially so. <br /> <br /> <br />In spite of this fact, its \01l.ter supply, taken from Coal Creek which <br /> <br /> <br />rises west of, and flows through the town, has become increasingly in- <br /> <br /> <br />adequate, because of the marked decrease in base flow of Coal Creak. <br /> <br /> <br />In recent winters especially, there was not enough water for domestic <br /> <br /> <br />neede. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />This is not entirely a new development. In 1918 due to the <br /> <br /> <br />same causes the town undertook to provide supplemental water by con- <br /> <br /> <br />verting the natural Leke Brennan, 8 miles west at the head of Anthracite <br /> <br /> <br />Creak into a reservoir. At that time the natural level of Lake Brennan <br /> <br /> <br />was raised 10 feet by a loose rock-filled timber crib in the natural out- <br /> <br /> <br />let of the lake and water was delivered to Coal Creek through a tunnel <br /> <br /> <br />that had in early days dol1vered water to the mining town of Irwin, lo- <br /> <br /> <br />cated just over Q low divide forming the south shore of the lake. <br /> <br /> <br />While there is nothing about the present construction that can <br /> <br /> <br />be salvaged for a larger development, Lake Brennan is the logical source <br /> <br /> <br />of a greater supply of stored water. Studies were therefore undertaken <br /> <br /> <br />to discover how great a supply of storable water might be available at <br /> <br /> <br />Lake Brennan and how large a reservoir could be constructed at moderate <br /> <br /> <br />unit cost. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />Water supply studies indicate that a reservoir holding 4,000 <br /> <br />-c- <br />
