.. . 001831

.

.

acre-feet of water, although it is certain that more water is now diverted

when it can be hod. In spite of the lack of record it seems probable there

is some shortage on Ohio Creek every year.

It would not be financially feasible to attempt to supply such a

shortage as that of 1940. Recant studies on streams relatively cloBe to

Gunnison County indicate that the shortags in 1940 was about one and one-

half times the average for a teIm of yeCU"s. If the same ratio applies on

Ohio Creek 8,000 acre-feet of storage would probably be justified, but it

is believed that as Po first apprOximation and until more record is available

storage of 6,000 acre-feet would except in the dryeet years mature a good

crop of meadow hny on all Ohio Creek lends now irrigated.

Methods of Supply

nith Lpke Brennan as a possible sourco of supply for Ohio Creek

lands thero are two possible methods of using it.

Through 0 new and larger outlet from Lake Brennan to Coal Creek

the water for both the town of Crested Butte and the Ohio Creek irrigators

could be released. The water used by the irrigators would then flow dO\7D

Co!'J. Creek and successively down Slate Creek, East River and Gunnison

River to the vicinity of the present Gunnison-Ohio Creek Ditch. '!his

ditch enlarged and extended up Ohio Creek valley, (and possibly relocated

at n higher elevation), must then be carried to such a point west of the

west line of T. 50 N., R. 1 E., as to covcr a large body of lower Ohio

Creek valley lands and release flow of Ohio Creek for use further upstrernn.

No attcmpt has been made to estimate the cost of the changes in

the Gunnison-Ohio Creek Ditch, because there is a very valid objection

to this scheme from another point of view. The stored woter WOuld in this

case be used only once before it escaped to Gunnison River or Ohio Creek.

.

-24-
