001828

.

Irrigation Development

The valleys of Ohio Creek end the low mesa irrigated from both

Ohio Creek and Gunnison River are divided as follows, the total of water.

ri€,,ht decrees being sho\m after the number of acres now irrigated:

Totals Ohio - Gunnison Area
, These decrees from Gunnison River

Acres Sec.Ft.
3,BJl 140.00
6,900 174.60
2,260 83. 50'
12,990 398.10

Upper Ohio Creek Valley .
Lower Ohio Creek Valley
Gunnison River Volley .

In the tabulation above it is assumed thut all lands west of the west

line of T. 50 No., R. 1 E., New Mex. Mer., are watered from Ohio Creek,

although it is possible some Gunnison River water is also used west of

this line. For the whole ares water right decrees run at the rate of

.

one second-foot for Jl acres. In the specific areas the rates are:

Upper Ohio Creek Valley .
Lower Ohio Creek Valley
Gunnison River Valley .

. .

Acre I Sec.Ft.
Z7
39
26

.

.

This would indicate that there is probably more land irrigated from Gun-

nison River and less from 10\~er Ohio Creek than is shO"lIl in the tabula-

tion above.

Recent Water Shortage

In 1939 and especially in 1940 there vlould probably have been

a shortage on the Gunnison River lands cllOYlIl above, as there are 2,950

acres east of the river in addition .to the 2,260 acres west of the river

that must be supplied by tho flow of East and Taylor Rivers as measured

at Almont. Hovlever, releases from Taylor Park reservoir, which pass

.

dO\1!! this part of the stream were fr13ely used by these irrigators. No

record of their diversions is kept SO that the actual use by these irri-

gators of Taylor Park releases cannot be shOVlIl nor evaluated.

-21.-
