Advance p)annhlg studies nOW' underway she'\{ that
the irrigation W'ould be increased to about 3,CXX> acres, and 1,000 acre-
feet annual.1y .....ould be :furnished for a domestic vater supply f'or the
Southern Ute Tribe.

Depressed Area

The entire area of the Dolores Project is encompassed vithin the bounda-
ries of' the Four Corners Economic Development Region--a region designated
under the Public Works and Economic: Development Act of' 1965} because of'
persistent high unemployment and depressed incomes and economic activities.
The Cities of' Dove Creek and Cortez l' Colorado are 10cated wi thin the
Dolores Project boundaries. Tbese cities were designated as eligible
f'or assistance under Title I of' the Public Works and Economic Develop-
ment Act. Part of' the project (Tovaoc area) would also qualify under
Title IV of the Act on the basis o~ irri~tion service to an Indian
Reservation which man1:fest a high degree of eeo~c distress.

Environmental Impact

1. The very scenic cartyon of the Dolores River will be inundated}
resulting in loss of' scenic area and aesthetic t1A_ge :from dam construction.

2.
Dolores

Possible stream fishery and recreationa1 enhancement of the
River would take place if minimum streaa rlows can be established.

3. White vater boating actirlty could be seriously curtailed by
impoundment of spring flows. Present operational. plans seem to provide
nearly the same number of boating days vi th cont;rolled spilJ.s vi th the
project as without the project.

4. Salinity 'WOuld be increased in the CoICJr3do River at Lake ~a.d
from 6 to II mgjl. by the project. The increase would depend on the
tons per acre of salt pickup f'rom ~ly irri~ted lands and from vater
depletions .

1
