maxiJnum of 250 feeto Water levels will be low from August to April

with a sharp rise from April to June followed by the rapid disoharge

of irrigation water whioh will reduoe the reservoir to minimum level

in September, Drawdown will be as muoh as 50 feet in some months

and rises will be of the same magnitude.

c;

390 As based on the operation study, the reservoir will be

empty about 3 times in 10 years. Within the 384-month period, the

dry reservoir bed oonditions totaling 23 months would have ooourred

several times in August and September as well as during 2 winters.

Water level fluotuations will expose large areas of the reservoir

bottom during oertain months of the year and thie oondition will be

a disadvantage to the establishment of trout-food organisms (Plate

5) . Prolonged periods of low water may permi t a liJni ted development

of vegetation in some areas whioh, upon inundation, will aid fishery

oonditions somewhat by providing improved food a!ld oovero Although

the frequency of a. low or empty reservoir will be such that maintenance

of an adequate fish population to attract fishermen is expeoted to be

a problem, a favorable aspect of low water periods or a oomplete draw-

dawn is the feasibility of oontrolling rough fish, especially suckers

which are oonsidered to be a major problem of reservoir managemento

Utilization

Stream Fishery
40. The projeot will reduoe the quality of fish habitat whioh

in turn is expeoted to be refleoted in lowered fisherman utilizationo

Periodio inundation of the Rio Grande and its tributaries within the
.

reservoir si te will make these streams less aocessible and lese

utilized, There will be some fishing in the I-mile reaoh beleR the

21

11.67
