'

Phosphate

Phosphate rock crops out as a minor stringer on the north flank of

Split ~IDuntain, but to the northwest, in the Brush Creek area, deposits

are up to 22 feet (6.7 m) thick. These deposits north of Vernal are a

major national resource and are under development. 30

Permian age phosphate deposits are found in the vicinity of the

township line between T 2 and 3 N, R 20 E. Samples taken in the area

were analyzed by the Bureau of Mines, and results showed an overall

average of 12.4 percent P205, or almost half the grade considered as the

lower limit of medium grade.31Low grade of that deposit plus the great

t~ickness of overburden indicate future development is remote.

Barite

A small occurrence of barite has been noted in mf~SW~sec 33,

T 3 N, R 25 E, about 3 miles (5 km) north of the Green River in the Red

Creek Quartzite. This small deposit "suggests by implication that

similar and perhaps larger deposits may occur elsewhere in the area."32

30Unfermann, G. E., and B. R. Untermann.
