The present 92.4 miles .of sinueus, b,raided chaxmel
weuld be 'reduced te 60.7 m11e!! .of defined channel. ,This change 'in
channel length weuld net significantJs alter the river water surface
area available fer fish and wildlife purpeses because the restored
channel would have enJs 705 acres, less water surface than the pre-
sent r~stricted channel.

Fer hydrelogic analyses, the Rie Grande channel was sub-
divided into nine reaches with varying channel ~apacities. The channel
capacities were based, upen the Cerps .of Engineers' estimates .of non,.
damaging flows at Del Merte and Alamesa, ,and adjusted .te. account fOr
the diversien capabilit'ies of seven majordiversiens between the twe
cemmunities. A summary .of the channel capacities and siZes, together
with a typical cress section, are shewn on plate 1.

The existing Rio Grande Canal diversien werks weuld be
utilized in the plan. Thirteen ether majer diversien structures
weUld be replaced with new cencrete dams and headworks. Irrigatien
service te smaller diversiens weuld be previded threugh 96 miles .of
riverside canals which weuld alse act as cellectien channels fer
i3urface runeff frem miner tributaries and drains. Other majer struc-
tures required weuld be eight cencrete highway bridges and .one timber
'maintenance bridge. The riverside canals weuld require check struc-
tures, ditch turneuts and .outlets te the river channel. A mainten-
ance road weuld be proviii'ed en the tep .of .one .of the spe11 bank
levees threugheut the restered chaxmel length. Riprap pretectien
would be previded at structures and at majer channel alinement changes.
The lew-flew characteristics wauld maintain an adequate depth .of
water in the restared channel and it would not be necessary te pre-
vide a lew-flew channel for the Rie Grande.

The cest of restering the Rio Grande channel was estimated
in table 1 te be :$8,020,000, and the annual eperatien, maintenance,
and replacement cests were estimated in table 2 at $120,000. The
channel resteratian weuld result in an average annual reductien .of
water lesses .of 18,800 acre-feet. The project weuld be ecenomically
feasible with a benefit-cest ratie .of 2.70 te 1.0 as shewn in table 2.

A supplemental study was made .of restering the Rie Grande
channel in a 12-mile reach extending from the meuth of the praposed
Clesed Basin Division Cenveyance Channel'te a peint 4 miles below
the meuth .of the Cenejes River. The censtructien cests weuld ameunt
to $1,292,000; and annual operatien, maintenance, and replacement
costs weuld be $20,300. The average annual reductien in water less

3
