After the end of the irrigation season the water is drained out of
the syphons and th~t part too low to drain is then pumped out, During the
past ye~r \~ter was pumped out of 16 syphons,

A l~rge p~rt of the spring and fall cleaning is still done with teams,
during 1939J six miles of the High Line, 8 miles of the Low Line Can~l and
175 miles of lateral were cle~ned with teams, The use of teams gives the
w~ter user an opportunity to work out a part of his operation and maintenance
ch~rges, 70,75 miles of laterasl were cleaned with the Ruth Machine,

The laterals below the drops are continually eroding and have to be
rip-raped with rock or broken concrete, These repairs will have to continue
from ye~r to year until the lateral section below each drop on the project is
protected,

The syphon on lateral #108 become plugged with weeds and blow sand
during the winter months and every effort to get the w~ter through the syphon
was unsuccessful unti~ a hole was drilled through the syphon at it lowest part,

The weeds th~t blow into the canal and lat~rals and those along the
banks that might interfere, ~rc burned e~eh spring befor~ water is turned into
the ditches, During 1938 the weeds were burned from 129,5 miles of canal and
232 miles of lat,_rals, During the non-irrig"-tion se~son the crews go over the
Main Canal frequently and burn the weeds that have blown in, otherwise they
would be covered with drifting sand and would form mounds in the canal,'

The timber headgates and weir crests .~.re being re::-l".ced with met'll
g~tes and crests, During the PQst year, 104 mot~l headg,,-tes and 57 metQl
crests were installed, The he'cdgotes and crests are mQde in the District shops,
