,

,

.

.

Task 2:

Biological Design and Culture Techniques

Objective:

To evaluate factors to be used as specific design criteria for an endangered fish
hatchery.

Responsibility:

FishPro and Bio/West will take the lead, with other team members
contributing.

Methodology:

1. The following factors will be evaluated:

a, Development of broodstock and refugia population needs: These will be
determined through interviews with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service,
Propagation Work Group, Colorado Division of Wildlife, and Utah
Division of Wildlife Resources personnel in collaboration with personnel
at the Dexter National Fish Hatchery.

b. Capacity for genetic monitoring: This will be discussed and evaluated
with U,S. Fish and Wildlife Service propagation specialists and
geneticists.

c. Fish health/pathology/Quarantine facilities/disease control: To be
evaluated under advisement from state hatchery fish culturists.

d. Fish production: To be based on the three scenarios presented in Table
I and on known space and facility requirements from the Willow Beach
and Dexter National Fish Hatcheries.

e, Stocking plans: To be evaluated from experience by Utah State
University, Arizona Department of Fish and Game, Regions 2 and 6 -
U.s, Fish and Wildlife Service.

f. Predator control/avoidance: Similar guidance will be applied to this
criteria as used in traditional hatchery operations.

g. Research plans: Research needs perceived by biologists currently
involved with the species will be solicited and identified for possible
incorporation into a feasibility design,

2. Fish Pro and Bio/West will interact with other members of the project team in
evaluating the following factors:

a. Facility fOr controlled spawning: Expertise is available at the Dexter
National Fish Hatchery to help us assess this activity.

b. Mortality rates: Personnel at the Dexter and Willow Beach National Fish
Hatchery have good information on mortality rates of the endangered
fishes in the various life stages under hatchery conditions,

c. Water temperature, water Quality and space requirements: Much
information is available in the literature on water temperature; space
requirements for the various life stages of each species will be
determined in consultation with hatchery and university personnel.

3
