.

.

vicinity of the Harmony Dnch head gate has averaged around 600,000 acre-feet per year. Historic
diversions are discussed in a subsequent section of this report,

.

Groundwater Supplv
Since the mid 1950's, a portion of the District's irrigation requirements have been supplied
from groundwater wnhdrawals from the alluvium of the South Platte River, In 1972, there were
about 124 wells wnh a combined potential pumping capacity of 297 cis (17,600 acre-feet per
month), The number of wells in use and the potential pumping capacny has not changed
appreciably since that date, Although no records exist, n Is believed that about 13,700 acre-feet per
year has been wnhdrawn from the alluvium which underlies portions of the District. This estimate
of groundwater wnhdrawalls based upon a water balance for the District discussed In a subsequent
section, "Water Utilization," and Is summarized in Table 8, According to District personnel,
groundwater wnhdrawals are not expected to change appreciably in future years,

.

.

.

Water Riahts

The project lands are irrigated using water derived from five sources of supply, These are:

1, Harmony Ditch No, 1 direct flow;
2. Releases of storage water from Julesburg Reservoir;
3, Peterson Ditch direct flow;
4. Settlers Ditch direct flow; and
5, groundwater withdrawn through wells for direct irrigation,

Julesburg Reservoir is filled from diversions made through the Harmony Ditch No, 1, Table 7

summarizes the District's water rights and percentage of ownership of those rights,

.

.

Monthly summaries of historic river diversions for direct irrigation, deliveries to storage,
storage releases and reservoir storage content have been prepared for the 1970 through 1990 study
period, to the extent records maintained by the Colorado Division of Water Resources (State
Engineer) are available. These tables are enclosed in Appendix F,

.

Based upon examination of the diversion records and on discussions with District personnel

and the District 64 Water Commissioner, it was determined that actual water deliveries to the

irrigated fields wnhln the District service area cannot be readily determined from the available

information and records, The records are Inconsistent, incomplete, and in many cases, are

apparently only estimates made without the aid of accurate measuring devices, It would be difficult

.

9

.
