.

e.

r .

will be categorized, as much as is possible, ou the basis of antcccdcnt conditions and time-of-
year. Esrim","" of losses will be made using adjusted streamflows between adjacent gaging
stations, if possible, but more distant stations may be considered. Estimates of streamflow losses
will be derived for the hydrologic conditions that have sufficient data and will include an
evalUadon of errors. Estimates of ttaveltimes would be derived from the sm:amflow recotd
analysis by noting the approximate arrival times, at a downstream station, of various flood
hydrographs ~ed at an upstream station. If the comprehensive analysis of streamflow
records fully meets the stUdy objectives, a detailed report will be prepared describing the results
and providing graphs and tables that can be used to estimate streamflow losses and ttaveltimes
for a variety of hydrologic conditions.

Because streamflow records are not concurrent for all stations on the Purgatoire River, not
all tribntaries are gaged, effects of return flows are not definitely known. and the considerable
variety of possible hydrologic conditious throughout the smdy area, the streamflow analysis may
not be able to provide conclnsive estimates of streamflow losses and ttaveltimes for all stream
reaches, all the needed release discharges from Trinidad Reservoir, or all needed antecedent
streamflow conditions. If the study objectives are not fully met by analysis of historic streamflow
data, a second pbase of the smdy could be initiated that might apply the following:

1. Use of routing techniques to route streamflow bydrographs througb selected
subreaches of the river to estimate streamflow losses and traveltimes. The routing
analysis may include application of digital models and other techniques that allow
esrim.ring the various components of streamflow losses, such as bank stotage,
channel storage, evaporation, transpiration, and possible recharge to bedrock
aquifers.

2. Perform gain and loss investigations (seepage runs) along the smdy reach for
different streamfJ.ows and at different times of the year. Results of the gain and loss
investigations could be used to verify the streamflow routing results, or visa versa.

If phase two of the study is needed, an additional project proposal will be ~~ providing
more details of the approach prior to beginning phase two,

F. REPORTS:

The proposed study will result in a Water-Resources Investigations Report. If the analysis
of historic streamflow data is conclnsive and fully meets the smdy objectives, the repon likely
will be considerably detailed; however, if the second phase of the smdy is needed, then the
report may be simplified or the results from the first phase might be incorporated into the report
presenting the results of the second phase of the study, Quarterly progress repons will be
provided to the smdy cooperators.

~
