,

..

.

administration will be thoroughly addressed. It is envisioned that these issues will be the
subject of one of the brainstorming sessions. The project team anticipates working closely
with the CROSS project management team in further defining, refining and prioritizing the
needs of the CRDSS by "walking-through" a number of the previously mentioned problems.

At the end of this task a rich set of problems will have been identified that the CROSS
must address. The final product of this task will be a prioritized list of CROSS needs. The
list will be delivered to the CROSS Advisory Committee by October 1, 1992.

TASK 2: DETER..'\fINATION OF NEW AJ.'ID EVALUATION OF EXISTING MODELS
AND PROCEDURES

Introduction

Successful completion of Task 1 will have provided a significant foundation for the
model evaluation task. The goal of Task 2 is to produce an inventory of existing models,
tools and procedures that are needed to support the decision-making process in the CROSS.
Furthermore, additions or enhancements to existing or new models and/or procedures need
to be defined, described, and prioritized. This tasiclVill also address how the CRDSS needs
to adapt to future needs as they emerge.

Anmini,;tration

.

Hussam Fahmy will lead this Task, with assistance from Anand Prakash, Edith
Zagona and Pedro Restrepo.

Detailed Work Plan

The primary work item in this task will be to evalUate models in the context of the
problem descriptions identified in Task 1. The project team will work with the users in
documenting solution procedures for each problem. The users will specify the models and
procedures they currently use or would like to use in the solution process.

The determination of new and evaluation of existing models and procedures will
follow three steps:

. model classification;
· model availability survey; and
· model evaluation.

Model Classification

All models will be classified according to their characteristics regarding model type
and spatial md temporal scales and aggregation levels:

Three subclasses of models will be distinguished: simulation models, optimization
. models, or malysis models.

-3-
