Wells in the mountainous areas of Jefferson County, like the
mountainous areas of all Front Range counties, have experienced problems with low production
and poor water quality. The Study has a total estimated cost of $500,000, of which $238,000 is
budgeted for FY 1998. The County is requesting a grant in amount of $20,000 to help pay study
costs in 1998. A map of the study area is attached.

Sally Cuffm of the US Geological Survey, Water Resources Division, has prepared a preliminary
proposal for the study, which is attached.

DISCUSSION

The County is in the process of obtaining funding for the study from several sources. These
sources include Jefferson County itself, the US Environmental Protection Agency, the USGS,
and the CWCB. The portion requested from the CWCB is a relatively small part of the total
study cost.

The County has been proactive and has conducted a number of informational meetings to gather
technical information and to discuss the study with subject matter experts.
