Need for the Project

~

The SIC is undertaking repairs to their headgate and diversion
structures to ensure that it can continue to divert water from
the South Platte River. The current facility has three major
components. They are the ditch intake, the concrete diversion
wall, and a sand dam. The ditch intake is a concrete structure
using a board system for adjusting flows into the ditch. This
structure is in deteriorated condition due primarily to its age.
The concrete diversion wall is a 4 ft high and 200 ft long wall
located in the river channel used to divert flow into the ditch.
This structure is also in deteriorated condition. At times of low
river flow, a sand dam is pushed into position to divert water
into the canal. At times when short periods of high flow exists,
the sand dam is washed away creating a water shortage in the
canal and the need to push a new sand dam into position when the
river flows allow. Most recently this type of damaging event
occurred in 1995 and 1997. Additional problems do occur with the
existing structure, they include sand plugging the ditch and
debris, mainly trees, hangs up on the diversion.
