<br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br /> <br />The predominant soils in the service area are the Kim-Olney-Otero series as listed in the Soil <br />Survey of Weld County, Colorado, United States Department of Agriculture, September 1980. <br />These soils are nearly level to moderately sloping, well drained sandy loams and loams formed <br />in a mixed alluvium and eolian deposits. Following is a more complete description of the soils <br />as taken from the soil survey. <br /> <br />Kim series: <br /> <br />The Kim series consists of deep, well drained soils that formed in mixed eolian deposits and <br />parent sediment from a wide variety of bedrock. Kim soils are on plains and alluvial fans. <br />Slopes are 0 to 9 percent. Kim soils are similar to the Colby, Otero, Shingle, and Thedalund <br />soils and are near the Fort Collins and Olney soils. Colby soils are more silty in all horizons. <br />Otero soils are less than 18 percent clay in the C horizon. Shingle and Thedalund soils have <br />shale between 10 and 40 inches. Fort Collins and Olney soils have a B horizon. Typically <br />these soils have free carbonates at the surface content of coarse fragments ranges to as much <br />as 10 percent. <br /> <br />Crops yields per acre in this series are: 3 to 4 tons of hay; 20 tons of beets; and, 80 to 140 <br />bushels of com. <br /> <br />Olney series: <br /> <br /> <br />The Olney series consists of deep, well drained soils that formed in alluvium. Olney soils are <br />on plains. Slopes are 0 to 5 percent. Olney soils are similar to the Fort Collins and Vona <br />soils and are near the Kim, Nelson, Otero, And Thedalund soils. Fort Collins soils are less <br />than 35 percent fme and coarser sand in the B horizon. Vona soils are less than 18 percent <br />clay in the B horizon. Nelson and Thedalund soils have sandstone and shale between 20 and <br />40 inches. Thickness of the solwn ranges from 17 to 30 inches. Coarse fragments make up <br />as much as 15 percent of the solum. Depth to free carbonates ranges from 10 to 24 inches. <br /> <br />Crops yields per acre in this series are: 3.5 to 5.5 tons ofh ay; 24 tons of beets; and, 80 to <br />180 bushels of com. <br /> <br />Otero series: <br /> <br />The Otero series consists of deep, well drained soils that formed in alluviwn and eolian <br />deposits. Otero soils are on plains and terraces. Slopes are 0 to 9 percent. Otero soils are <br />similar to the Kim, Nelson, Tassel, and Thedalund soils and are near the Olney and Vona <br />soils. Kim soils are more than 18 percent clay in the C horizon. Nelson, Tassel, and <br />Thedalund soils have sandstone and shale between 10 and 40 inches. Olney and Vona soils <br />have a B horizon. Typically these soils have free carbonates at the surface.
