from the ponds is returned to the river by underground
percolation which due to a time delayed effect causes the
majority of this water to show up in the river during the
summer time. This is the time when the SDC has depletions
that need to be offset with additional augmentation water.
The development of recharge ponds also provides habitat for
migratory waterfowl. The SDC would drill 2 wells to
discharge water directly into their ditch for recharge
purposes. The SDC would also drill a well for supplying
augmentation water directly to the senior calling water
right. This is a drought management tool currently being
used by GASP with approval from the State Engineer to help
provide augmentation water during the most severe drought
situations. The cost of this alternative is $135,000.

The Selected Project

The SDC plans to construct alternative #3. Features of this
alternative are as follows:

Two new recharge ponds with small earthen dams will be
constructed on existing irrigated farm ground.

An existing unused recharge pond will have a small pumping
station installed in the ditch to lift water into it.

Two wells will be drilled next to the river bank and piped
backed to the ditch. This will be done to provide water
during times in the winter when the river freezes.

An augmentation well will be drilled away from the river to
provide direct releases for the senior calling water right.

All of the above features will be equipped with proper
measuring devices along with the end of the ditch.

Water Rights.

There are 52shareho1ders in the SDC with rights to divert 62.5
cfs from the South Platte River under an 1886 decree. The
official name on the decree is the SPRINGDALE DITCH COMPANY with
their water being diverted down the SPRINGDALE DITCH.

Feasibility Study
Springdale Ditch Company
Augmentation Project
May 2003

5
